Topic: Newbee in Cairns

G'day all,

After a few decades working for the Crown (yeah i know)  lol :lol  I have had the oportunity to take on a new venture in a world that i new, only 6 months ago very little about.   Still know bu**er all but i can at least tell the difference between a Dingo and the others.   Not sure if any of the other operators in Cairns are forum contributers but i have taken on the comments regarding talking to other operators that where given on the forum.   Like so many small businesses i owe the bank and so am very motivated to make this business work.   I take delievery Thursday of a K9-4 and contractors kit more or less.   I have the skills to do a spreader bar myself.   The truck is a Canter tipper.   Not sure now if i should have gone with a trailer set up but considered the tipper gave me more options.   I'll be looking for advise and suggestions and trying to make the learning curve as quick as possible.   You can see i worked for the gov but try not to hold it against me.   The business is A1K9 Precision Dingo Digger and with good grace i'll have a web site up in the next week or so.

Gday mate,
Welcome, Ive just recently started up down here in Ipswich and will be interested to hear how you go!
Goodluck, by the way are you doing your own website up?, Just threw one up myself and it was a lot easier than I thought and cost a grand total of around $80.00.  Vistaprint was great for bus. cards and signage too, worth a look.

Re: Newbee in Cairns

Thanks Wannabe, yes i will be going down that road.  Iit has the potential to reach the most customers besides word of mouth.   I have secured a domain name through my ISP but as yet not the skills to set the web sight up.   The last quote i got, to do the job was $300 but that included hosting so i may give it a go myself.   Anyone else please put in your thoughts.

On another line any recommendations on foot wear...i know it can be a very personal thing but recommendations based on experience would be appreciated.

Re: Newbee in Cairns

Try crazydomains.com.au mate, they will host for you cheap and come with tools for the build, once you get started its pretty easy, I went with justhost.com.au but think crazy has the better build tools now Ive done it once.

G'day Marbles
As for footwear.....after someone suggesting on this site years ago I tried Steel Blue boots and they are by far the best. They are so much more comfortable than any others I have tried and last for ages.I have only used the argyle leather ones but can't recomend them enough for our line of work, standing and bouncing around on a steel platform good part of the day.

Re: Newbee in Cairns

Yeah what Adrian Said, Steel Blue are by far the most comfy and hard wearing boot you can get in my opinion, they feel like a Jogger on and take the abuse day in and day out, When they are new you hate taking them off when you get home,

Craig

Re: Newbee in Cairns

Marbles,
Welcome aboard the Dingo Express.  I have only been going two years and thoroughly enjoy it.  I originally only bought my machine to help with landscaping but it has turned into a full time job.  Forums like this are great for us newbies because almost everything has already been tried and tested by the OLD blokes that get on here. big_smile   Remember that there are no stupid questions.  Ask away and you will get good advice from the friendly bunch that visit here.  Boots?  I just use the old Blundstone steel caps.  Maybe I'll try some of the others one day but I'll have to wear my current pair out first.  I always wear "sock savers" to keep the gravel, mulch, crusher dust etc out of my boots.  I also wear ear protection (muffs or plugs) as I don't want to end up deaf.
Anyhow, good luck with it all.  It is a bit of a learning curve but once you stop breaking things it turns into a pretty good living.

Thanks all, i'll go and try some on for size and Macca thanks for the words.   I'm sure i'll make you all tired with the questions.

Re: Newbee in Cairns

I thought I'd already weighed into the boot discussion earlier....obvously not!!!

For the record my last pair were Blundstones. I had a pair of "Steel Blues" before that, and was VERY happy with them. I only strayed to the Blundstones because at the time they were offering a chance to win a V8 brUTE. Although they were pretty comfortable off the shelf, they haven't lasted all that long, maybe 18 mths (the Steel Blues copped 18 mths on the Dingo, but they had also done 2yrs of factory work prior). This time around we've gone back to the Steel Blues (and lucky me they have a promo on atm as well).

Re: Newbee in Cairns

Nothing too special....."The ultimate cricket experience". You and 3 mates staying at Burswood Casino in WA. Lunch with one DK Lillee and a few other test players. Then Channel 9 corporate seats for the test against the "Poms" at the WACA. I could handle that!
